Marine Iguana…San Cristobal, Galapagos

When I was a child, we had a house full of slightly uncommon pets. True, we had the traditional family dog(s) that watched over us kids and snuggled a wet nose against my cheek and coated my face with a tongue lashing of complete adoration each day, but we also had many reptiles. One in particular was not nearly as warm and cuddly (as reptiles tend to be) as the others.  He was a nile monitor lizard with a long, dark speckled frame that was uniquely intriguing, but who had a nasty disposition and waited patiently poised to swing its 3 foot whip of a tail at anyone who ventured to crack the top of his terrarium. He was bigger than I was at the time, which was saying a lot since I sprouted a good 4-foot tall early in life, and I used to watch him through the glass wondering if he was contemplating the day when he would get to eat me rather than the large rodents he would fiercely tear in half before consuming. He was cool, on a childhood ‘unique pet’ status scale, but he was never one of my favorites. In fact, I didn’t think I was going to be much of a reptile person at all until my brother got a green iguana. A sweet, sits on your shoulder, eats out of your hand, VEGETARIAN of of lizard. Pretty cool. He looked like a miniature dinosaur…Little did I know at the time, he practically was. I watched a nature show with him once that talked about the ‘marine iguanas of the Galapagos’ and I explained to him how they were his extended family. Even more amazing was that not only were they vegetarians, but they would swim in the ocean and eat the algae growing on the rocks below. Cold blooded critters would actually dive into the water, swim to the bottom, and nibble on green slime rather than eat other creatures! Wow! (He was very impressed) Sadly, no matter how often I tried to put him into his water dish, the kitchen sink, and even the bathtub…he had absolutely no interest in swimming (in fact he began getting a little annoyed with my efforts to encourage him 🙂

Now, I finally get to see the creatures I awed over so very many years ago, and I remain my 10 year-old giggling, giddy, jumping up and down excited.

I saw my very first marine iguana minutes after landing in San Cristobal. Marco, who picked me up from the airport,  asked me (in broken spanish/english) what I most wanted to see during my visit. I burst out before he could even finish the question, “Sea Iguanas!” He has a kind smile, and corrected me by saying what I think is the scientific name, followed by ‘marine iguana’ and he snaked his right hand through the air back and forth as if it were a swimming snake. I repeated “marine” to acknowledge our great accomplishment over the language barrier and he stopped the pick-up truck on a long, seemingly empty road a minute later. He got out and walked under a short hanging branch on a dirt path that lead out to a sea of black lava rock. there were easily a dozen marine iguanas sunning themselves sprawled out among the stones.

I have since discovered that these little critters are quite common here. The will sun right next to you on the sand, they walk on the same paths to the beach, and they let you get quite close to them without acting even mildly concerned.

But the most amazing thing…is that they swim *grin*

Airport, Galapagos, Guayaquil, luggage, San Cristobal, traveling to the galapagos, weight limit

I took four flights to finally land in San Cristobal, Galapagos. The only one I didn’t almost miss was the 30 minute connection (that I was almost positive I would miss) between San Salvador and Guayaquil.

If you don’t already know (and love) me, to read this journal you will have to come to terms with my particular shade of blonde. Which is simply what I name my incessant excuses for remaining delightfully (if not annoyingly) ignorant of otherwise common sense information. Basic information like: even though you go through security in SFO and arrive in LA you will then still actually have to leave the terminal, go outside and find the international terminal, and…yes…go through security again. Seems very obvious when you say it out loud, but for someone who is attached to the ‘once you’re in, then you’re in’ idea, the 200+ yard run in the beautiful southern California sunshine (bus was temporarily out of order), and the painfully long and slow line at security was more of a, “really?!?” rather than a “duh.” which it would be for most.  With all my adventures I still arrived at my gate as we were boarding.  Worked out quite well actually, except for the slick wet sweat dripping down my back and coating my face, and having to forfeit my newly purchased bottle of water at security.

My San Salvador and Guayaquil connection was quite simple…exit plane, walk 50 feet, board plane.  *grin*

I decided to get a hotel for the 7 hours I was in Guayaquil, but even so, if you are traveling here, I would recommend giving yourself PLENTY of time to go through the lines at this airport. I watched many a teary-eyed, frustrated, yelling, flipping papers and cash, angry and disheartened  traveller making the olympic qualifying sprint to their gate only to find the plane in the air.

Instead, I had the great good fortune to have amazing friends who travel to the Galapagos every year with their fishing company Northeast Angling, give me very good direction (that I will pass on):

(Side Note:  My friends from NE Angling pair up with Sportfish Galapagos with Pete Santini and his crew on the Vertigo 2 while they are in the Galapagos. AMAZING fishermen, boat, and experience if you are ever in the neighborhood!!!)

1. Check with your specific airline for luggage weight limits. Although mine was not checked, I was told that others paid steep fines for over-weight luggage and carry-ons. I only brought a carry-on with a weight limit of 8kg-17.6lbs, and I had my computer and other essentials in my ‘personal item’ bag which is also allowed as a carry-on.

2. Guayaquil airport–

Deplane and go through customs go up the escalator. Then take your ticket and passport to the YELLOW sign for your $10 tourist pass (there was a very long line), from there immediately to the right there is a WHITE sign where they check your luggage (I believe it’s the agriculture inspection, they didn’t require me to go in this line because I had only a carry-on). Then you can go get your boarding passes and find you gate on the right.

3. Just a note, when you arrive in San Cristobal, the $100 national park entry fee is cash only.

After I stepped out of the small cement building doubling as the local airport, I was met by Marco who took me to my hotel (check with your hotel about a pick-up option, if not, a taxi ride is $2)

I arrived…and the adventure begins!

Let the adventure continue…

I’ve decided to continue this blog as a wonderful holding place for my travel adventures. Although, since Bali, I have had several trips (Mexico, Turks and Caicos, and local adventures) that are not mentioned here, I still like the idea of making room for my thoughts, ideas, and experiences in one fairly consistent place.  I also like that it encourages me to be present and truly settle in to the moments along the way.

Today started as most of my very favorite days do…with great anticipation.
